As Joe and I have driven around Korea, we often talk about the things that seem weird and out of place, things that are totally at odds with their surroundings. Of course what we mean is that these things would be out of place in America, in our own context. Here in Korea, they are right at home. They are "in" place. Here are some great ones:
-Phone chargers hanging from outdoor exercise equipment at the top of a hill in Bamboo Forest in Damyang. You know, just in case you were hiking around in the bamboo and you took too many pictures of yourself and didn't finish tweeting about how wicked cool the bamboo is, you can hang out for a few minutes, charge your phone, enjoy the view, and get a workout in.
-Office chairs, Lazy Boys, couches sitting roadside, outside of restaurants, or in the middle of the woods. I guess we all need to take a load off now and then, and really, who can wait to get all the way home to sit down in comfort? And what's more fun than leaning back in an ergonomically calibrated office chair on the side of a two-lane country highway and watching the traffic go by?
-If you live in the countryside of Korea and you are old and have a motorized wheelchair/cart, and you need to get from point A to point B, the best way to do it is drive your cart on the two-lane road as though you were a real vehicle. All those pesky people in cars will just have to wait as you top off at 6 miles per hour.
-It takes a lot out of a person, driving through the back roads of Korea, checking out all the little towns, visiting one cultural treasure after another. What better way to revive yourself than with a fresh cup o' Joe. But wait! You're in small-town Korea--where will you ever find coffee? Kimchi, most likely, but coffee--fat chance. But wait, what's that yonder, shining in the distance? A beautiful, red, strategically positioned coffee truck! And it smells amazing! And it has a cute little awning. And what's that? Celine Dion belting her heart out through the open window! One Americano and one Caramel Macchiato to go, please!
-You know what's boring? Bathrooms shaped like bathrooms. You know what's better? Bathrooms shaped like grasshoppers!
