I have long been baffled by the presence of puddles of water on the teachers' office floor. Some days the puddles are there, and other days they aren't. I never saw how the water got there, and I've spent a time or two scanning the ceiling for leaks, but to no avail. It was mystery water that gleamed treacherously as I tried to side-step it in my high heel boots.
The other day the mystery was solved. As I was discussing a lesson plan with my co-worker, William, the office secretary came by with a coffee pot filled with water and flung it all around the office floor. I stared in disbelief, and William stared in disbelief at my disbelief. He explained that water was thrown on the floor to humidify the air. I continued staring. My boss, Ms. Suh, noticed my confusion and chimed in with William--yup, the puddles of water put moisture into the air and are good for our health.
I must admit, the anger monkey went a little wild inside of me. And the sense monkey. Not to be a total B about this, but I don't get this practice. Drench the floor with water and we'll all be healthier? No. I think what is more likely is that we, or probably just I, will slip and fall on the lagoon of a floor and look like an ass.
It goes without saying (and yet, here I am saying it) that in the states any trace of water on an office floor is accompanied with a bright yellow sign warning passersby to steer clear, to be forewarned, to avoid the area at all costs. Yes, I think we overdo it a bit with all the warnings and the cautions and the bewares, but still it's helpful to be told that trouble lies ahead. The warnings can of course go too far. I mean, if you burn yourself with hot coffee because you dumped it on yourself, that's hardly grounds for suing McDonald's. And yet.
My point is, I do appreciate the fact that in Korea you are required to watch out for yourself. Nobody is going to tell you that there is a pothole in the road or a lake in your office. You have to be smart enough to notice. But on the flip side, I still think it's nutty to puddle up the office, and on this one point, I intend to remain staunch in my disapproval. :)

agreed.
Guess it is better than peeing on the floor for better health.
